Would you look at that? Actual fake news!
A Texas teen who alleged three African-American men abducted and raped her in early March admitted it was all a hoax on Tuesday.
According to the Dallas News, Breana Harmon Talbott (above) was arrested on Wednesday for making a false report to police. The Denison Police Department called her story “unfounded” in a news release on Facebook.
The 18-year-old was reported missing by her fiancée on March 8 and was later found in a church, bloodied and only in her shirt, bra, and underwear. There were visible cuts and scratches on her body.
Talbott told authorities that “three black males” wearing ski masks had abducted her from the apartment and took her to a wooded area where they sexually assaulted her.
But the inconsistencies in her story quickly began to raise doubt with officials. Denison Police Chief Jay Burch said in the Facebook post:
“Almost immediately, Talbott’s story and allegations began to unravel. Within only a day or two, detectives had doubts as to most of Talbott’s allegations.”
As of now, police believe the crime scenes — from the apartment complex to the church — were staged. Talbott also admitted on Tuesday that the injuries on her body were self-inflicted.
The release notes medical officials who examined the teen were unable to confirm she had been sexually assaulted.
Its unclear what caused Talbott to admit the hoax, let alone why she would make this harrowing story up in the first place.
Police are closing the investigation, with the department issuing an apology “to those who have current investigations with the department as we delayed those to focus on this case.”
So frustrating for officers, but we’re glad no heinous crime took place. Read the department’s full release (below):
