John McEnroe Won't Apologize for Serena Williams Comments

John McEnroe made some controversial comments about Serena Williams and where she would rank if she was playing the men’s circuit… and now he says he won’t apologize.

The former tennis star said that Serena, who he admitted is the greatest female tennis player in the world, would only rank #700 if she was playing in the men’s league.

Serena took to Twitter to respond to the comments and she rightfully did not seem happy about what he said.

While appearing on CBS This Morning on Tuesday (June 27), John was asked why he made the comments.

“I respect Serena very much so,” John said. When asked if he would like to apologize though, he said “no.” He did admit that his comments were “not necessary,” but he did not think they’d create controversy.

“I don’t want anything to go wrong with Serena because she’s pregnant. I don’t want to upset her or whatever it was. She’s – I think she was doing a tongue-in-cheek as well,” he added. “I can’t even believe we’re talking about it.”

Serena Williams has heard John McEnroe‘s misogynistic comments about her talents, and she’s letting him know they’re NOT okay!

In case you missed it, the retired tennis pro called the pregnant athlete the best female tennis player, but said she would rank around the 700th spot if she was playing in the men’s circuit…

What a troll move!

So on Monday, the superstar player took to her Twitter to shut him down! She wrote:

Amazing!!

Sadly, it didn’t resonate with John as he made an appearance on CBS‘s This Morning on Tuesday to say he’s not sorry for making his comments about Serena!

He started off by telling cohost Norah O’Donnell that “no,” he would not apologize:

“I respect Serena very much so and I was simply calling her on NPR — which supposedly this is where you can say it like it is and you’re gonna get honest feedback — she’s the greatest player, female player, that’s ever lived.”

But still, he seems clueless to his demeaning statement about Serena’s skills:

“I didn’t know it would create controversy.”

Even after having read Williams’ tweets, he didn’t really get why she might be upset:

“Serena has a way with words. I don’t want anything to go wrong with Serena because she’s pregnant. I don’t want to upset her or whatever it was. I think she was doing it tongue-in-cheek, as well, and I think that, deep down, we’re talking about something I can’t even believe we’re talking about right now.”

Whomp.

In the end, he ranked the athlete fifth in his own personal list of greats, maybe just to appease the hosts…
