Don’t be afraid of the British. Their TV shows are just as good as ours, sometimes better. They deal in police procedurals, serial killers, gangsters, mysteries and goofball characters same as us. Imagine, there’s a whole entire country’s worth of awesome TV you probably haven’t explored.
Starring: Mackenzie Crook, Toby Jones,
A thoughtful, relaxing, funny series that will simply make you smile, Detectorists is about two metal detector hobbyists who fancy themselves modern day treasure hunters. Their dreams are huge, entirely romantic, and often hilarious. Jones is stellar as always, but its Crook’s show (he writes, stars and directs) and he’s fantastic navigating a possible new love opportunity while keeping his girlfriend at bay.
Starring: Gillian Anderson, Jamie Dornan
At six episodes a season, The Fall moves fast between those crucial season finales. It follows Dornan as an Irish serial killer who targets beautiful young brunettes and the brilliant detective (Anderson) assigned to catch him. The show has the cat and mouse thing going for it as Dornan taunts the police as family man and murderer Paul Spector. Anderson is in full-on genius mode here and it’s fun to watch.
Starring: Stellan Skarsgård, Nicola Walker
The six-episode first season swivels on the huge talents of Skarsgård. He plays the title character, a brilliant detective haunted by the death of his partner (Walker). As he hunts for her killer, his mind becomes increasingly off-kilter. This show is funnier than it should be and smart about what it reveals each episode.
Starring: Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Helen McCrory, Paul Anderson, Tom Hardy
After World War I, London was a gangland and the well-dressed, Irish-infused Peaky Blinders operated with impunity until Winston Churchill ordered a clean-up of the city. That’s where the series begins and it has a Godfather angle working as boss Tommy Shelby (Murphy) is recently returned from the war. He’s ambitious and looking to expand the gang’s reach, but Major Chester Campbell (Neill) is after Shelby and will do anything to take him down.
Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs
If you have not yet discovered the genius of Sherlock, the best show on this list, then we are envious. You have an unwrapped Christmas gift waiting for you. It’s nearly impossible not to admire the show, which is made up of four seasons of three long episodes (the first three seasons are on Netflix). Each episode is meticulously constructed as the writers keep the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic deductor and bring him into modern times. Sherlock thinks faster than lightning and it’s a blast watching Benedict Cumberbatch motor through his lines and find his culprits.
