Beckham is the 30th man People has honored with the title, following ’14’s Chris Hemsworth and ’13’s Adam Levine. He told the mag it was “a huge honor,” and that he was “very pleased to accept” after the announcement was made via Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday. He also gave a brief speech on the show, referring to the title as the “best moment of his career.”
“I would obviously like to thank my parents for bringing me into this world,” he said. “I would also like to thank my hairdresser, my stylist, photoshop…”
The 40-year-old came into notoriety as a professional soccer player, joining English club Manchester United. He had a successful career in the sport, eventually establishing himself an icon and celebrity. He married former Spice Girl and fashion guru Victoria Beckham in 1999, and presently has four kids, Brooklyn, Romeo, Harper, and Cruz.
Beckham’s full life notwithstanding, perhaps the best part of the super star/super dad hybrid is his modesty.
“I never feel that I’m an attractive, sexy person,” he told People. “I mean, I like to wear nice clothes and nice suits and look and feel good, but I don’t ever think of myself that way.”
Upon hearing the news of David’s hot new title, Victoria congratulated him while the couple’s eldest son, Brooklyn, had a burning question of his own:
“Are you sure it’s not me that’s meant to be there today?”
