Up, down, up, down, up, down, and then it stays down…

Empire was without a doubt television’s biggest influence on pop culture in 2015, and while the magic may have died down in America for Season Two, it apparently never even began in other parts of the world!

It may be impossible to believe based on how well the Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard musical drama was first received, but we’re hearing that not only are the FOX series’ global numbers down… they’re downright abysmal!

In fact, according to a report in April 8’s Hollywood Reporter, the show is currently failing in countries like the UK, Germany, Australia, and even Canada, to name a few.

For instance, Season One averaged 17.33 million viewers on FOX… but only pulled in 717,000 on England’s Channel 4!

We know they’re a smaller country, but that’s an unbelievably drastic change.

Similarly, poor ratings forced Empire to move from a Primetime slot to online-only airings in Canada, and from Channel Ten to its smaller sister network Channel Eleven on Aussie TVs!

President of International TV at FOX Marion Edwards addressed the alarmingly small viewership, but unfortunately attributed the numbers to a racial divide, saying:

“These shows are a reflection of our society, but not a reflection of all societies.

Having a diverse cast creates another hurdle for U.S. series trying to break through — it would be foolish not to recognize that. We are telling our units that they need to be aware that by creating too much diversity in the leads in their show means… problems having their shows translate to the international market.”

That seems like the exact opposite response to have, Marion…

Still, past shows with all-black casts like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and The Cosby Show have fared well overseas, so maybe the international market just doesn’t like musicals???

Why do U think Empire is tanking across the globe??
