Everyone knows Deadpool’s lady love is the stunning Vanessa Carlysle (Morena Baccarin), but in a recent interview, Ryan Reynolds suggested there was room in the Merc’s heart for another — possibly a boyfriend?
Speaking with Variety in a conversation published Tuesday, Jan. 3, 40-year-old Reynolds — the face behind the masked badass — admitted he got through “choppy waters” (cough cough, Green Lantern) in order to play antihero Wade Wilson, a role he felt “we could get right.” As such, according to the site, the actor won’t rule out the possibility of a male love interest in future films.
“What love is to Deadpool may not be what love is to Batman or someone else,” he said. “I think that could be played up more. He’s an outsider in every way, shape, and form.”
Fans of the original Deadpool comics know the former Special Forces operative was pansexual, or an individual attracted to people of any sex or gender. Wilson is the first Marvel character to be written as such.
When posed with the argument that such a romance might cut off a big-budget superhero flick’s success in the global market, the father of two was quick to laugh off the so-called issue.
“That’s not really a problem for us, because we were banned in China,” he pointed out. “We were rated ‘F–k you!’ in China.”
China is traditionally considered a boon for major action films, but according to Reynolds, the country’s loss didn’t have a notable influence on the NSFW movie’s profit.
“We might have been the first billion-dollar R-rated movie,” he noted.
Deadpool released on Feb. 14, 2016, quickly jetting to the top of the box office. It is now the highest-grossing X-Men film ever to have hit the international market.
Deadpool 2 will film in 2017, and is slated to hit theaters some time in 2018.
