The Guardian reports Joseph Fiennes, Blockbuster Entertainment Awards winner, brother of Ralph, and, by all accounts, a white man, will portray the King of Pop, Michael Jackson in a new “comedy special” for Sky Arts called Elizabeth, Michael and Marlon.
The story is the supposed true account of a road trip that included Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlon Brando driving across the country after the skies were shut down following the September 11 attacks in 2001. The three had to get back to California after a Jackson concert at that time, and they drove themselves. Fiennes will play Jackson, Stockard Channing is Taylor, and Brian Cox has the honor of playing Brando. This is all real information.
And as for the casting of white guy Fiennes as black guy Jackson. The timing couldn’t be worse considering the current backlash facing The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for failing to cast an actor of color in this year’s Oscars…again.
Twitter hasn’t taken the news well. But Fiennes was pragmatic speaking to US Weekly about the decision to play Jackson, “[Jackson] definitely had an issue — a pigmentation issue — and that’s something I do believe…He was probably closer to my color than his original color.”
Okay… we’re not touching this one. Except to say this is a movie nobody would be talking about about an event that may or may not have happened on a channel nobody’s heard of. It won’t be remembered no matter who plays Michael Jackson.
