Justin Timberlake broke hearts across the world when he and the rest of the members of *NSYNC left the band in 2002. The five members of the uber successful group stayed mum as to the truth behind their break-up. After all, fans argued, it wasn’t as though the band was failing. To the contrary, their final studio album entitled No Strings Attached was the best-selling album of the year 2000.

Now, Timberlake is an incredible success in his own right, having forged an impressive solo career. He spoke with The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Wednesday, finally putting an end to decades of speculation.

“We were on a stadium tour, and I just felt like the whole thing was too big,” the 36-year-old told the site of his decision to leave the group. “It started as a fun snowball fight that was becoming an avalanche. And, also, I was growing out of it. I felt like I cared more about the music than some of the other people in the group. And I felt like I had other music I wanted to make and that I needed to follow my heart.”

One would assume such a statement indicates bad blood, but all five members have since reunited on several occasions.

In 2012, Timberlake married actress Jessica Biel, and in 2015, the couple brought their son Silas Randall into the world. Timberlake has been nominated for more than 350 musical honors, and has won a respectable 133.

Most recently, Timberlake’s “Can’t Stop the Feeling” won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Song.

Seems like that love for music has really paid off.
