Take a good look, people! Because this is what progress looks like!!
Raffi Freedman-Gurspan is making headlines today as she’s become the FIRST openly transgender official to serve in the White House!
That’s right! History has been made this week as the 28-year-old began her work as the director of outreach and recruitment for the White House personnel office on Monday!
Raffi previously worked as a policy adviser at the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), and now she’s ready to rub shoulders with President Obama!
NCTE executive director Mara Keisling released a statement on the big move, saying:
“I am elated that Raffi Freedman-Gurspan will become the first openly transgender staff member at the White House. That the first transgender appointee is a transgender woman of color is itself significant. And that the first White House transgender appointee is of a friend is inspiring to me and to countless others who have been touched by Raffi’s advocacy.”
While she might not be the first openly transgender person to work in government, she’s definitely the first to work in the White House, and needless to say that’s a HUGE step in the right direction!
The move has already gotten a TON of much deserved attention and praise from LGBT activists, and we’re sure Barack Obama will have something to say when he returns from Martha’s Vineyard this weekend!
