According to The Wrap, the actors are in final negotiations, Rogen playing lovable warthog Pumbaa and Eichner portraying feisty meerkat Timon. Disney also announced the release date for the film on Tuesday, citing July 19, 2019.
If all goes according to plan, Rogen and Eichner will join Donald Glover’s Simba and James Earl Jones’ Mufasa. Rumors continue to circulate that pop star Beyoncé will voice Nala, though no promises on that front quite yet.
Jon Favreau (Entourage, Iron Man) will direct the film while Jeff Nathanson (Catch Me If You Can, Rush Hour 3) is working on the script.
The Lion King is one of several live-action revivals Disney will roll out in the next few years, Beauty and the Beast having released March 17.
Next on the list? Mulan on November 2, 2018, followed by The Little Mermaid and 101 Dalmatians, which do not yet have release dates.
