Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken the record for highest single-day opening of any film in history.
While it may not come as a huge shock, the numbers are impressive: Episode VII has grossed more than $120 million across 4,134 theaters since its December 18 release.
The previous record holder was the final installment of the Harry Potter franchise, 2011’s Deathly Hallows, Part 2 with just over $91 million.
Never before has a movie transcended the $100 million mark in a single-day period.
With a $200 million budget, these numbers put the film on the fast track to reaching its ultimate weekend goal of $220 million. On a global level, this number has already been reached with an estimated international $129.5 million. The only countries yet to have access are India and Greece, open Christmas Eve, and China, which will begin on January 9.
