On Sunday night, Miss Universe host Steve Harvey committed a major oopsie when he announced that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had won. Ariadna, naturally, was thrilled and hit the stage to take her Miss Universe victory lap.
But then something insane happened. In the middle of Gutierrez’s walk, Harvey announced that he had to apologize for something.
Here’s the full moment in all its terrible, awkward glory.
It turns out that Steve Harvey had misread his card and that Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, was the actual Miss Universe winner. Wurtzbach was obviously a bit confused, but then she slapped a good old-fashioned pageant smile on her face and stepped forward to claim her prize.
Harvey was very apologetic, telling the confusing (and booing) audience, “Listen folks, let me just take control of this. This is exactly what’s on the card. I will take responsibility for this. It was my mistake. It was on the card. Horrible mistake… but I can show it to you right here. It was my mistake. Still a great night. Please don’t hold it against the ladies. We feel so badly, but it’s still a great night.”
But the awkward moment to end all awkward moments was yet to come. Last year’s Miss Universe winner, Paulina Vega (who is also from Colombia), had to go through the horrible process of physically taking the crown off of Ariadna Gutierrez’s head to place it on Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach. Eeeeeeek.
If you want to cringe and then laugh uncomfortably and then cringe again, here’s a video of the full snafu.
You had one job, Steve Harvey. ONE JOB.
